The Roosevelt Island Tramway (New York City)
North America, Travel OptionsRoosevelt Island is an island in the East River of New York City and is part of the Borough of Manhattan (New York County). Roosevelt Island is located under the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge but is not directly accessible from the bridge. The Roosevelt Island Tramway opened in May 1976 to provide access to and from Midtown Manhattan, the tram reaches a height of 250 feet above the East River. The tramway was originally developed as a temporary mode of transit until the completion of the Island’s subway link. But due to its popularity by locals and tourists as well as becoming a necessary mode of transportation, the Roosevelt Island aerial tramway remained.
