Cruising into the Port of Lisbon is a feast for the eyes with monuments such as the Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries). Overlooking the Tagus River and the city of Lisbon is the truly amazing sight of the monument of Cristo-Rei (Christ the King) with welcoming open arms similar to the Christ the Redeemer monument located on the Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro. The 25 de Abril Bridge completed in 1966 is another amazing sight with two layers of traffic, the top layer for vehicles and the bottom layer for trains. Looking upward and hearing the traffic related sounds as we cruised underneath the bridge was thrilling. The 25 de Abril Bridge, reminded many of us onboard of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.
Port of Lisbon
The dock area, DOCAS (Santo Amaro Docks), in the Port of Lisbon, has been transformed from warehouses to trendy clubs, bars and restaurants all overlooking a yachting marina. A interesting sight in Lisbon are the quaint yellow trams that are visible throughout the city. In downtown Lisbon are various clothing stores, street vendors and shops selling hand painted tiles along with other souvenirs for visitors. Prior to arriving in Lisbon we had heard about and wanted to taste the pasteis de Belem which are small, puff pastry cakes with a soft creme brulee filling, which was delicious.
Lisbon is a city filled with monuments, statues, castles and buildings decorated with beautiful Portuguese azulejos (tiles)!
